Petunia’s Doelings

After much anticipation Petunia finally delivered three very healthy little girls also called doelings.  Let me take you on a little journey through this pregnancy and delivery.

We didn’t know exactly when she became pregnant because Huckleberry (the daddy) kept breaking out of his pen.  So there were a multitude of opportunities for her to get pregnant.  She had an ultrasound and we were given somewhat of an idea.  He said there were at least 2.

Petunia was constantly eating and getting bigger and bigger.  She showed us many signs early that she might be delivering.  What transpired was a month-long vigil on my part.  Staying close to home and checking her a couple of times at night.  I think that sometimes she would act like she was just to get more attention.  We did our best to keep her comfortable as she got bigger and just really wanted a lot of attention and food! Towards the end of her pregnancy she got more irritated with any animals that came near her.  I kept checking her ligaments by her tail to see if they were decreasing.  It is a way to tell if she is close.  Sometimes.  It worked with Petunia.  I had to research how long after the ligaments disappear would she deliver, 12-24 hours.  I can do that!   Then she bagged up big time.  It was huge.

I made sure she was kept inside the next day.  As the day went on I was really hoping she would deliver before dark.  I was tired and looking forward to some sleep!  About 4pm I knew we were headed to the goal.  My boys were there to watch the whole process.  They did better than I thought.  As she was pushing the first one you could see its little tongue licking its lips.  It was awesome.  My boys thought it was so cute.  It came out without any complications.

Since we knew that there were two we were watching for the second kid.  As momma was cleaning up this little gem we were watching to see if she would start pushing the second one out.  After a few minutes I decided it was best to go in and get it.  She just needed a little help to remember to push.  Petunia delivered kid number 2 without any complications.  It was in the perfect position and slid right out.

My boys and I were beaming with excitement and just reveling in the cuteness of these kids!   Then I tossed in a science lesson.  What happens next…..she delivers the placenta.  I kept looking at what she was pushing out and it was a giant sack.  I thought well that is a little weird why is there an extra sack with the placenta.  No biggie we have 2 healthy kids. Then as I looked at it again something began to move in the sack!!!!!!! HIDDEN BABY!!!!  WHAT!!!!  Three she is having a third one.  Oh my goodness.  The baby was the same color as the sack so you couldn’t tell there was anything inside.  Popped the sack and out fell a gorgeous healthy white kid.  We were all yelling HIDDEN BABY, HIDDEN BABY!!!! (she kind of looks like Gizmo)

These three little doelings are the reason that Petunia had such a big sack and was a little irritable the last couple weeks.  She is going to need a lot of milk!  When you research they say it is uncommon for a first time mom to have more than two.  They usually just have a single.  Well, Petunia proved them wrong. She delivered three very healthy kids.  They all weigh around two pounds.  The kids were up and nursing and trying to walk within minutes of their birth.  Each one is already starting to show a different personality to go with their different colors.
